Michael Stephens

President

Michael is a first year RAM at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he also completed a residency in Emergency Medicine. He is the President of AMSRO and was recently named an Associate Fellow of AsMA. Prior to serving as President of AMSRO, Michael had served as the Vice President for two terms, represented AMSRO at three AsMA Council Meetings, and served on the ASTM F47 committee for Commercial Spaceflight. During his time in office, Michael has guided the organization in major restructuring of the group and significant bylaw changes which bring AMSRO more in line with its parent organization. 

Prior to medical school, Michael spent 6 years as an active duty US Navy aircrewman from 2006-2012. He flew as a special operator aboard EP-3E Aeries II reconnaissance aircraft supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom in over 60 combat sorties earning 3 strike Air Medals. Through these operations, he was introduced to Aerospace Medicine. He holds undergraduate degrees in Arabic, Psychology, Nuclear Chemistry and a Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Ethics from the Medical College of Georgia where he earned his Doctor of Medicine in 2021. He is currently pursuing his MPH at the University of Minnesota.

Michael’s interests lie primarily in operational aerospace medicine as well as the ethics and standardization of crew medical requirements, selection, and recertification. He hopes to continue this work as a NASA flight surgeon upon completion of fellowship. He values the guidance, direction, and sense of belonging that AsMA has provided him over the past 6 years, and looks forward to the opportunity to continue to give back by being involved in the future of organization through AMSRO and the AFG.

Ryan Keller

President Elect

Ryan is a PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Resident at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He has been a part of AMSRO for 6 years now, serving as Treasurer/Membership Coordinator and now President-Elect, but has been interested in Aviation/Aerospace Medicine long before that. He is a die-hard Baylor Bear and New Orleans Saints fan. In his free time, he enjoys scuba diving and fishing.

Ben Johnson, MD, MSc

Immediate Past President

Ben holds the non-voting role of Immeidate Past President after his time as AMSRO president (2021-2023), Vice President (2020) and Secretary (2019). He is honored to provide his advice and experience to help the board with their agenda this year. Outside of AMSRO, he is currently a PGY-2 Emergency Medicine resident at Stanford Healthcare in Palo Alto, California. His other aerospace experience includes research on changes in the human microbiome in isolation, the psychology of polar exploration, computer detected team psychology measures, space radiation effects on the CNS, and vestibular function in microgravity. He was a Sally Ride Intern at NASA JSC in 2017 and received the Anita Mantri, PhD Memorial Travel Scholarship from AsMA in 2020.

Zack Campbell

Secretary

Zack Campbell is currently an Emergency Medicine PGY-3 and Chief Resident at Wright State University. Zack completed medical school in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. Previously he was involved in bone mineral density countermeasures with NASA and the Department of Defense through Indiana University School of Medicine. Zack has served since 2022 as Chair and Co-chair of the AMSRO Mentorship Committee. As Secretary, he is eager to continue promoting the field of aerospace medicine, providing information and facilitating opportunities to members. He is passionate about Aerospace, Motorsports Medicine, aviation, and travel.

Bryce Christensen

Treasurer

Membership Coordinator

Your AMSRO Treasurer and Membership Coordinator, Captain Christensen is a flight-medicine trained, internal medicine board-certified physician currently training in an active-duty pulmonary/critical care fellowship through Nellis Air Force Base and the UNLV School of Medicine in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has been a member of AMSRO since 2019, and completed a medical school rotation with NASA before graduating from Tulane University in 2020 as part of an accelerated MD/MBA program. He then went on to complete residency training at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. During residency, he took TDY time to obtain a basic flight-medicine certification from the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. 

 

Captain Christensen has served as Co-chair of the AMSRO Military Committee, where he planned events that fostered a strong relationship between AMSRO and the military. He has experience working as treasurer for the American Medical Association at Tulane as well as for the House Staff Counsel at the Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium in San Antonio. In his free time, Captain Christensen enjoys hiking, fishing, and hunting. He is married to his loving wife, and has a baby boy on the way. He is also a private pilot and space enthusiast. Tom Diaz

Parliamentarian
Historian

Tom is a PGY1 Pharmacy Resident at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He has previously served as a co-chair of the AMSRO elections committee and scientific paper award committee (2022), founded an AMSRO chapter at UNC (2022), and received the Space Medicine Association Medical and Graduate Education Scholarship (2022) and the AMSRO Scientific Paper Award (2023). He was the first pharmacy student to complete the NASA Aerospace Medicine Clerkship in October, 2023. His aerospace research interests primarily include space radiation countermeasures, medication stability and potency, and operational challenges of supplying a pharmacy in space. As parliamentarian/historian, he aims to spearhead a project on the history of AMSRO to establish and document the origins of AMSRO.

Corey Morris

Chief Editor (Orbiter)

Corey is currently a PYG-3 and chief resident of family medicine at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Kentucky. He completed his undergraduate degree at Tennessee Tech University and earned his medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University. Corey has served as AMSRO's webmaster for two terms and is presently a member of AsMA's communications committee. Additionally, he serves as the resident board member of the American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine.  Corey is excited to rejoin AMSRO's executive committee as the new chief editor of "The Orbiter," where he looks forward to sharing your aerospace medicine stories and experiences. Paul Foster

Paul Foster is a PGY-1 Family Medicine resident at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, having recently earned his MD from Loma Linda University. He commissioned into the Air Force in 2020, with aspirations to specialize in flight medicine and pursue a residency in aerospace medicine. He holds certifications in wilderness medicine life support and NAUI rescue diving, skills he hopes will help complement his future adventures and goals. Paul's research interests include physiologic outcomes of cosmic radiation, microgravity, and human hibernation.

As AMSRO webmaster, Paul is looking forward to bringing a new sense of fun and energy to the AMSRO website and social media platforms this year. Outside of the hospital, you can find him outdoors working on his climbing projects, carving down ski slopes, or searching for the best pastry spot in town.

Christine Schwartz

Resident in Aerospace Medicine Representative

Christine Schwartz completed her undergraduate and medical schooling at the University of Iowa then internal medicine residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia. To better support crew on analog missions and learn austere medicine, she decided to pursue a wilderness medicine fellowship at Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic. She focused her fellowship on diving medicine, working on obtaining a FAWM and DiDMM within the wilderness medical society. She is currently a first-year RAM at UTMB. She has lots of outdoor hobbies including scuba diving, white water rafting, rock climbing, caving, and sailing. She especially enjoys socializing within the aerospace medicine community and reuniting with AMSRO folks at AsMA

Bria Carmichael

Military Representative

Bria Carmichael is a second-year Epidemiology and Biostatistics student at UNC Chapel Hill and an Army Reservist. As a Combat LifeSaver (CLS) Specialist, she provides vital medical aid in extreme environments. Her training covers emergency response, trauma management, and critical care, reflecting the unpredictable conditions of combat zones. Bria's role emphasizes the importance of swift medical intervention, ensuring personnel safety and readiness. Her ambition in joining AMSRO is to bring a distinct viewpoint, forged at the intersection of military medical operations and the complex medical challenges of space travel. In doing so, she aims to bridge the gap between the military and AMSRO communities, fostering a spirit of collaboration that propels us toward innovative health solutions. As a military representative, she is excited to utilize her blend of tactical and medical expertise to improve health strategies for extreme conditions and advance aerospace medicine.

Beyond her military service, Bria is engaged in a research project with AMSRO members, investigating the potential role of oral magnesium supplementation in mitigating spaceflight-associated insomnia and anxiety.
